New Left 4 Dead 2 Controversy: Is It Racist?

by Nightshade386 :: posted Jul 16, 2009 10:42 PM EST
One industry critic seems to think so. We'll deconstruct his argument here.

Throughout much of 2008 and the first few months of this year, there was an uproar among some members of the gaming community calling Resident Evil 5 a racist game.  Set in Africa, Resident Evil 5 features a male white protagonist and a female black (though lightly skinned) co-op partner who will have to kill wave after wave of primarily black zombies.  Now some industry critics are drawing similar conclusions about Left 4 Dead 2.

A couple of days ago Willie Jefferson of the Houston Chronicle's game blog Game Hacks made the following comments:

I have no problem with blessing out a terrorist trying to stop me from getting my diamond-encrusted skull. Shoot, even some U.S. *contractors* won't stop me - and I'll blast them too. I've even run over some grannies in GTA. (by accident) However, put me in a position where I have to play as a real-life enemy - in a game - and I may end up dropping the controller.

I'm all for escaping reality in video games. I love turning into a Spartan, cruising space as Commander Shepard in "Mass Effect" and have fun as Niko in "Grand Theft Auto IV." However, I am disturbed by the growing trend of racist undertones that are cropping up in video games.

One of the games that comes to mind is "Left 4 Dead 2." Though the game isn't out yet, it's already causing an uproar. Set in New Orleans, players will have to fight their way through hordes of zombies - with several of them who appear to be African-Americans. When I saw the first trailer for the game, all I could think about was Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath. Setting the game in a city that was scene of dead, bloated bodies floating by so soon afterward was a bad call, IMHO. The city has had enough to deal with -- Valve, you should have spared them, even if it's just a video game.

Another game, "Resident Evil 5," puts gamers into the heart of Africa, blasting zombies. I bet you'll never guess what color they are.

If game developers and the like are going to use history and certain locations, they should be prepared to suffer the backlash that comes from it. It could be perceived as being racist - and turn some potential customers off.

Space is a safe place - Liberty City is an awesome place, but New Orleans ... or the Old South can be very, very touchy areas to deal with.

First off, I should concede the point that I am a white male.  I have not been touched by the same racial injustices that many African Americans have.  And his point about the tragedy in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina should certainly not be dismissed out of hand.

Nor should anyone believe that I do not respect Mr. Jefferson's opinion.  He has a right to it as much as I have a right to mine.  Yet to a certain extent, much of his argument against Left 4 Dead 2 seems like a reach to me.  I will attempt to present a counterargument for your intellectual digestion.

Perhaps we should delve back in time to the original Left for Dead for just a moment to gain some perspective.

I'd like you to meet Louis.  Louis was a junior systems analyst in his company's IT department before the whole world went to Hell in a hand basket.  He also happens to be an African American, and one of the four main protagonists in the original Left 4 Dead.

Louis and company trying to escape the zombie appocalypse together.
Louis and company trying to escape the zombie appocalypse together.

At no point in the original Left 4 Dead does Louis seem like a cheap parody of Black America (unlike DeeJay from the Street Fighter series, for example).  He works together with three other diverse people to survive a hellish situation.  This kind of acknowledgement of the diversity in America in a video game should be applauded.

In Left 4 Dead 2, we will be given an equally diverse cast of protagonists to choose from, two of which happen to be African American.  Rochelle, the upcoming game's female protagonist, is a reporter for a local cable company.  Coach, is well.....a high school football coach.  In fact if there's one unsavory member of the cast of Left 4 Dead 2, it's one of the white characters, Nick (a conman).

Another shining example of our diverse culture working together
Another shining example of our diverse culture working together

It should also be mentioned that in the Left 4 Dead series, the zombies are quite clearly....well....zombies.  Infected, zombies, call them what you will, but the color of thier skin is less relevant than the fact that they are quite clearly members of the undead.

In Resident Evil 5 by comparison, the zombies appear at times to be much more like crazed villagers.  There is a sense of "difference" between "those people" and the main protagonists, while in Left 4 Dead you never get the feeling that the survivors are anything but the lucky few that have not been infected.

In all I would say that I don't believe either Left 4 Dead 2 or Resident Evil 5 are racist per se.  I do believe that Resident Evil 5 could certainly be classified as "insensitive."  But I also wonder what a young German or Japanese person playing Call of Duty: World at War must think of the portrayal of their nationalities.  What does an Arab American think of the plethora of enemies in video games who happen to wear headscarfs.

And what of all those white government contractors that Willie Jefferson had no problem blowing away in 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand?  Was there an implied racism there, or were they simply obstacles to be overcome by the protagonist in his quest to retrieve his diamond-encrusted skull?

While racism means different things to different people and while all views should be respected, we should also consider the perspective of the story being told by the game in question.  Just because a particular nationality or ethnicity is featured as primary antagonists for a video game, that does not mean that there is any implied racism within the game.  And we should always withhold our final judgement until the game has been released.

Screw it, all enemies in every game from now on are to be purple. That way the only one to feel discriminated against is Barney.

Why does everything have to have a racist subtext, is what I want to know. I mean it's a game where you shoot people over and over with multiple types of guns and can cut off their limbs with a chainsaw. Does the color of skin matter when you are mindlessly killing everything you see as brutally as possible?!

In the link I provided in my article citing Willie Jefferson's blog, he discusses his feelings on Call of Juarez 2 as well. I felt that I already had more than enough material to work with simply with his Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil 5 comparisons to write what turned out to be a term paper length article. But the core of his argument (paraphrasing) is that he was left uncomfortable by the idea of playing as a Confederate soldier who kills Union soldiers in the game due to his deep appreciation of what the northern army did for the slaves by winning the Civil War.

As a bit of a Civil War buff myself though, I do believe that it should be noted that a good number of Confederate Soldier and Officers did not own slaves or believe in slavery. They joined the Confederate Army to defend against what they believed to be an invasion of their lands. Many people in the South at the time saw themselves as Virginians or Georgians first, and Americans second. It was the Civil War that forever bound us in blood as one country and not a collection of independent states.

Having not played Call of Juarez 2 I cannot really comment on the sensibilities of the main characters who Willie Jefferson felt offended by. By comparision I have played both Resident Evil 5 and the original Left 4 Dead and felt qualified to speak on the matter.

I don't really see how this is racist at all. The game takes place in New Orleans. It's primary inhabitants are African Americans. What should make up the majority of the enemies in the game, if not zombies who were once the African American residents of the city? I'd say this is more accurate, then racist. Just like Resident Evil 5. I never understood the argument there either. You were in Africa, for God's sake. What ethnicity is supposed to represented? It just seems like any time an ethnic group is represented in anyway that is less than a shining example, one person will always fly off the handle and throw up the race card. Recently though, they seem to be doing it without doing proper research first.

Yes, it must be racism....seriously? Not only would it be unwise for Valve to be racist if they want profit, but people these days slap racism and discrimination on everything. The term Racism is blown out of proportion and only exists because people say it exists. Basically what td0t said.

Racism only exists while you allow it to exist.

I completely agree that this is a non-issue. It was blown out of proportion in RE5 and it's taken to a new height here.

Jefferson needs to realize that not everything is about race. While you said we can't imagine what a particular group had to go through to get where they are today, how long do we have to "pay" for the injustices of generations past? I don't hear and see the masses going after Germans because of what happened during WW2*, I don't see people going after the British for what they'd done in India.

*Those who were directly involved in the war crimes are still being punished when found. Notice that it's DIRECT involvement though.

Why is it, that in our sue first, then second, ask questions later society, can't we just move on? All too conveniently, people seem to forget that in Medieval England, you were a slave to your king, the church and the land. Serfdom was prevalent and never seems to be brought back up because it's a historical footnote.

Time will never heal wounds if you continue to re-open them when it's opportunistic.
